Emanuel Whittaker is a specialist construction, regeneration and refurbishment contractor — trusted by local authorities and social landlords across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire for nearly two centuries.
Our services focus on specific market sectors — primarily public sector housing, alongside public buildings and private sector renewal — all backed by our own directly-employed workforce and active joinery manufacturing division.
End-to-end new build and refurbishment programmes delivered on time, on budget and to a consistently high standard of workmanship.
Kitchens, bathrooms, doors, windows and whole-home upgrades for social landlords — completed with care and minimal disruption to residents.
Large-scale regeneration that revitalises neighbourhoods — bringing tired housing stock back to life and rebuilding community confidence.
An active in-house joinery division — continuing 180+ years of skilled craftsmanship producing bespoke timber components and fittings.
A Green Deal Approved Installer and FENSA-registered contractor, helping landlords improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon across their stock.
Refurbishment and renewal of public buildings and private sector property, partnering closely with clients from first survey to handover.
Emanuel Whittaker — later Mayor of Oldham in 1873 — established his company on its present site in 1837, following his father George, a master builder who raised the Oldham Lyceum and many of the town's cotton mills.
In 1849 Emanuel became the first person in Oldham to install steam-powered sawing and woodworking machinery — an appetite for new technology that still runs through the firm today. The business survived the cotton famine, two world wars and recession, finding opportunity in every era.
It remained in family hands until 2004, when it passed to current owners Clive Newton and John Gallagher — both of whom have worked here since leaving school. Today the company is built on traditional values of integrity, honesty and excellence.
Our original mark — still carried with pride after more than 180 years of building across the North West.
From a Victorian master builder's yard to one of the North West's most trusted regeneration contractors.
